The Five Levels of Leadership on a Sailboat ⛵️

Leadership Is Not Only Understood. It Is Experienced.

There are experiences that can be taught. And then there are those that can only truly be understood by living them.

Today, I had the privilege of bringing together two of my greatest passions: coaching and sailing.

And what better place to talk about leadership than on a sailboat?

During this experience, participants did not learn about leadership in a training room. They experienced it.

Between the sea, the sun, the wind, the sails, the ropes, the sheets, the winches… and the manoeuvres, every moment became a metaphor for leadership.

On a sailboat, no one can succeed alone.

If the crew does not communicate, the boat loses its rhythm.
If there is no trust, manoeuvres become difficult.
If everyone moves in a different direction, the common course disappears.

And above all, the skipper cannot do everything alone.

The skipper sets the course, observes, anticipates and makes decisions… but ultimately, they need their crew.

Isn’t that exactly what happens in a company?

A leader may have an exceptional vision. A manager may have all the necessary skills. But without communication, trust, commitment and the ability to help others grow, the boat does not truly move forward.

This is precisely what we explored today through an immersive masterclass dedicated to the 5 Levels of Leadership.

Because leadership is not simply about holding a position of authority.

You can have a title without being followed.
You can be followed because you inspire others.
And, over time, you can reach a level where your influence goes beyond your role, status or position.

But just as in sailing, staying on course requires constant attention.

I would like to warmly thank YacA – Yachting Algeria, for once again giving us the opportunity to experience this extraordinary adventure on the water, with a level of professionalism and passion that truly makes all the difference.

A very special mention also goes to our wonderful skipper, whose experience, teaching skills and mastery contributed to making this day so much more than simply a day at sea.

My thanks also go to the entire team of young entrepreneurs from the Blue Green Business Incubator, for their energy, curiosity, commitment and willingness to learn differently.

Because ultimately, leadership is not only understood.

It is lived.
It is observed.
It is shared through stories.

And sometimes… it can be felt in the way a crew makes a sailboat move forward.

This is what I love about coaching: creating experiences that allow people to step back, see themselves differently, and turn awareness into meaningful and lasting change.

And what if, tomorrow, your team could also step outside the meeting room to learn how to communicate, make decisions, trust one another and move forward together… differently?

Leadership can certainly be developed in a training room.

But sometimes, it takes on an entirely different dimension when you experience it between sea, wind and horizon.

I have the privilege of accompanying women, men, managers and executives during those moments when a single insight can change the course of a journey.

Together, we take the time to move beyond automatic patterns, broaden perspectives and develop a way of leading that is more aligned with their values, their vision and the person they aspire to become.

What if your next leadership seminar started… at sea? ⛵️
